Black Owned Business
The Black owned business is growing by leaps and bounds, even internationally, as opportunity is being made more possible by the Internet and information technology. This growth did not happen overnight. Kamau Austin, author of the award-winning book, “Always on Top” says that Black business has gone through emancipation, segregation, integration and now international stages.
He labels the life for the first free Africans and their families after the so-called emancipation as the segregation stage. Often times forced into isolated communities, they had no other choice but to meet their own needs thus birthing the first Black business owners. Black business women in particular can look to Madame C. J. Walker, the first Black millionaire, as a prime example of such entrepreneurs as she paved the way for their later successful entrance into the market.
Access to better education allowed African Americans to become CEOs and managers of many major corporations. As a result of this integration stage, many of these managers went on to become Black business owners while gaining access to capital. Reginald Lewis is a key figure head of this time as he was the first African American to own a billion dollar business – TLC Beatrice Holdings.
Austin goes on to state that we are now seeing the seeds of internationally successful black entrepreneurs taking root in the shape of such entrepreneurs as Bob and Eunice Johnson, Don King and Oprah Winfrey. They have transcended racial barriers and reached out internationally.
One of the earliest Black business owners whose life encapsulated all four stages was John Harold Johnson who was the grandson of slaves and rose to earn a place on the Forbes 400 list of richest Americans, another first for black business owners. At the the time of his death in 1985, he was eighty-seven and his fortune was exceeded half a billion dollars.
